BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University will be holding a Fan Fest in conjunction with the football scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 22 at Provost Umphrey Stadium. The Fan Fest will begin at 5:30 p.m. from the stadium, with the Cardinals scrimmage set to kick off at 7 p.m.
Families can experience a free night of fun and football on the LU campus, highlighted by a red and white scrimmage. There will be games for the kids, and free Kona Ice treats available, along with picture opportunities with the coaches, players and members of the LU spirit squad. Fans will also be entertained by the LU marching band. Free LU mini footballs will be handed out (while supplies last).
Prior to kick off players will be on hand autographing free schedule posters. The autograph session will take place from 6 - 6:30 p.m.
The team will step on the turf for a red/white scrimmage beginning at 7 p.m. It will be the Cards' second scrimmage of camp, as Big Red looks to improve upon a record-setting 2014 season. The Cardinals tied a school record for wins last season and return 20 starters from that squad including preseason All-Southland Conference selections
Reggie Begelton (receiver),
Justin Brock (offensive line),
Kade Harrington (running back),
Omar Tebo (defensive line) and
Xavier Bethany (safety).
A preseason first-team selection, Begelton enters his final season already listed as one of the school's all-time best receivers. The question for Begelton, and the other offensive threats LU has at its disposal is who is going to get them the football.
Since all-time passing leader,
Caleb Berry, has exhausted his eligibility whoever wins the starting nod will be a new signal caller. The leaders entering camp are both transfers –
Carson Earp (Navarro JC) and
Joe Minden (Stephen F. Austin). Earp gained notoriety in the juco ranks, while Minden was a highly touted player coming out of high school who has one year of eligibility remaining after spending four seasons in Nacogdoches.
